Rapid sand filtration is a rather complex process – it is demanding and expensive in design and operation and requires well-trained personnel for monitoring, operation and maintenance. It can provide safe drinking water only in combination with pre and post treatment measures.


The backwashing of such filters is very similar to that of an open rapid gravity filter. A bellmouth and pipe can be used for the removal of dirty washwater in a vertical filter; for most horizontal filters a single vertical plate located near to one of the dished ends facilitates washwater removal, but for the larger filters, a central washout channel formed by two vertical plates is necessary.


Down-Flow Design. Conventional pressure rapid filters operate in a down-flow manner, meaning water flows in the top of the filter and down through the filter media. The filter media is usually 15 to 30 in. deep. Various types of filter media are used, depending on the filter's purpose.


While the proper filter media is important to the performance of rapid gravity filters, evidence suggests that filtration and backwashing performance is highly dependent upon the design of the filter underdrain and the support for the filter medium.
